News Legrand Announces Unity Home System Upgrade With IP Camera Feature(8/9/2011) CEDIA US Expo 2011 Stylish Home System Now Includes Remotely Viewed IP CameraFunctionality for Added Home Security and Consumer Convenience Legrand, the leader in home technology systems, announced today asignificant software upgrade for the Unity Home System that enablesremote viewing of any camera connected to the Unity Home System. The IP camera can be viewed on a smartphone, or on any PC or Maccomputer. The video can also be used via third party applications, such as iPhone or Android apps and DVR applications. "We live in a world where smart applications have givenpeople new freedoms and mobility," said Dave Hanchette, vicepresident of marketing for the Home Systems Division of Legrand,North America. "This new IP camera feature for our Unitysystem allows people who are on the go to stay connected with theirhomes even while they"re away. They can worry less aboutseparate home functions and establish a genuine level of peace andcomfort regardless of location." Unity combines popular stand-alone systems such as multi-roomaudio, lighting and temperature control, intercom, and cameras toproduce one integrated home system. Unity is built on theplug-and-play functionality for which Legrand is known, and is thefirst system of its kind to give home buyers an affordable homesystem option previously reserved for the luxury market. Unity is the newest component of the Studio Collection – agroup of products inspired by contemporary design trends fromaround the world. These products combine innovative functionalitywith elegant style to create home systems that bring enhanced valueto the homeowner through increased convenience and attractivedesign. The system integrates the components of the StudioCollection to form the ultimate home system. Initially released in November 2009 with audio, intercom, andcamera functionality, Unity has expanded and added new features tomatch consumers" lifestyles. Recent upgrades have added localweather information, event timers for home automation with anextremely easy-to-use setup wizard, and a music upgrade thatprovides better integration with iTunes and Windows Media files. The IP camera upgrade is provided as a free upgrade to the Unity2.3.software. After upgrading or installing a new Unity system, anycamera on the Unity system can be viewed as an IP camera. Thein-home user always retains ultimate control over the image, however, so that only those cameras that are wanted to be availableover the Internet (with password protection) are accessible. For example, while travelling a homeowner can check in on theliving room to see how the pets are doing, or simply for peace ofmind. A parent at work or out for the evening can see how thingsare going with the kids back at home. Homeowners can even see whohas visited their front door (or any other door) over the course ofa day or week. The Unity system may be expanded to incorporate up to four cameras, including one at the front door intercom. Convenient viewingapplications for PC/Mac, iPhone, Android and Blackberry enable easyswitching between cameras in the Unity equipped home. These viewingapplications automatically adjust camera frame rates, so the systemalways provides home owners with the best possible image qualityfor the available connection speed. How It Works Unity"s liquid crystal display (LCD) is the homeowner"spoint of interaction. It includes an easy-to-use but powerfulgraphical user interface (GUI) which enables control of the homesystem – intercom, audio, camera, event settings and weathergauge – at the touch of a button. The GUI is displayed on ahigh performance screen and operates similar to a cell phone oriPod, with simple, menu-driven navigation. An integration module houses the "brains" behind thesystem, and includes convenient RJ45 connections for audio, intercom, and camera systems. It not only facilitates directconnections between these systems, it enhances existing systems todeliver additional functionality. For example, when Legrand"sSelective Call Intercom system is connected to the IntegrationModule, users are able to leave messages for family members inselect rooms, or set up alarms and wake up calls throughout thehouse or in specific rooms. Unity also enables the intercom systemto work with a Legrand camera system to perform automatic cameraviewing via the LCD screen when the door button is pressed. A typical Unity system would include four rooms of intercom, fourzones of audio, and one camera. It would also include one LCDConsole or TV Display Interface, both of which enable convenientsystem interaction via graphical user interfaces. This standardsystem can also be expanded to accommodate a system of up to 32rooms of intercom, eight zones of audio, four cameras, two LCDConsoles, and up to 16 TV Display Interfaces. Based on standard Cat 5 wiring, Unity is surprisingly easy toinstall. It features RJ45 connections and does not requirecomplicated programming like higher-end home automation systems.Instead, it uses On-Q"s plug-and-play functionality to enableeasy, one-person installation and provide significant time and costsavings for the installer. www.legrand.us/onq Visit our featured links Visit our sponsors and showcases.
