The new wave of consumerism has hit the Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore, hard. The past decade has seen trends and patterns from the western world creeping in the way we design our homes, interiors, fashion, jewellery and more recently, flowers. Gone are the days when flowers were an occasional spend on Valentines or an anniversary. Flowers are now a mainstream décor intervention and have seen organized boutiques in Bangalore vying for the “wallet-out”, design savvy consumer. There has been a constant effort from both brick and mortar players as well as online florists to stay relevant in these design-heavy times for flowers and the upscale consumer wants more western trends for that everyday designer arrangement which ornates her drawing room. Like fashion then, floral design is now seeing ideas and themes entering Indian markets as soon as they make a mark in their western counterparts. Bangalore has been seeing a constant influx of these floral arrangement trends and has now placed itself at par with some of the more evolved countries in terms of “floral quotient” 1) Ribboned Stems Are In: Ribboned Stems with a slightly nude treatment is hugely in vogue as Bangalore seeks an elegant, noise free treatment to it’s flowers. The long standing Indian tradition of wrapping the flowers in a glittering cellophane paper and tying them with a tape is now old school. French Braids where ribbons are braided with the aid of corsage pins are a huge hit with giftees and gifters alike. So, the next time you have to send flowers to Bangalore, make sure you get a French Braid done. 2) Pastels and Whites are out: The conventional pastels and whites which dominated flora since it’s inception here are now found wanting for buyers. The flavour has now tilted towards stronger shades of purple and family colours like turquoise and azure. A small problem (or opportunity we think) is that these colours are not economically viable for florists and thus a blend of purples and whites is being used. The pace with which these colours have been accepted though, makes us believe that in a couple of years, purple is going to become mainstream. 3) Crescents are in: Vertical floral arrangements which were the tune of the day are now giving way to crescent shaped designs which have been fancied across the spectrum from roadside vendors to boutique stores. Crescents allow for a holistic blend of flora to make their way into the arrangement and lend a streamlined feel to the bouquet. 4) Thinking beyond Roses: For more than two decades, flora in Bangalore was synonymous with Roses. Whatever the occasion, roses were the preferred floral gifts for recipients and there was little educating done by boutiques themselves. Times are changing though and much emphasis is placed on understanding the significance and situational accuracy of the flowers to be gifted. Orchids, Birds of Paradise, Lilies and Tulips are now finding flavour amongst consumers and there has been a conscious effort on the part of boutique owners and specialist designers to teach shoppers relevancy and usage of different flora as per the suitability. Trends and styles are flooding Bangalore at the same time they hit Western markets. There was a time when patterns used to make their way in this city 6-7 months after their entry in the US markets, especially in flora. This evolution has made sure that florists are now investing more in their education (which is lifelong in this case) as well as educating their designers and support staff. Flowers in Bangalore now have a cosmopolitan feel to them and it is a welcome change at that.
