Tire retreading is a multibillion dollar global industry, which has foot marks in almost all nations of the world. It is one exercise which is beneficial to the individual and the corporate sectors, environment friendly and most importantly saves money. A retread tire cost up to 70% lesser than a new tire with almost equal capabilities. Tire retreading can be seen as a process of restoring a worn out tire by rebuilding the grooves. This is not an easy process and tire retreads, if not done by professional companies, may cause severe accidents. However when tire retreads are done properly, retread truck tyres can be used continuously, as many as five times over. What adds so much value to tyre retreading? Well the major cost component in a new tire is the manufacture of the tire body or the casing. However treading is only a part of the cost, and with the advancement of production techniques, the tread (the part of the tire that meets the road) can be easily replaced. There are basically two types of processes. The cold process is a process where quality retreads are bonded onto a tire after the tire is rebuffed (old markings are removed). The casing and the new tread actually left to bond with time and pressure in what is known as a pressure chamber. The hot process is a more commonly used process flow where the tires are first inspected and then processes almost as similarly as new tires. Aluminum molds are used and new rubber is used in a cast to recreate the treads directly on the tire. The ideal day at the tire retreading facility starts with the worn tires being assembled in the storage area and examined. They are then loaded onto inspection spreaders and the damage to the casing (both external and internal) are ascertained. The next activity is rebuffing were the old treads are removed from the tires. This is followed by pre cure building, where procure cushion is applied to the casing and a pre cure tread is applied. More often than not, an envelope is applied on a pre cured tire, in the form of a nylon or plastic feature, so that the tire gains strength. Next comes the actual process, where according to the facilities, either hot or cold processes are applied for retreading. Finally the finished tires are inspected for defects or flaws. If required the retread tires are sent to the paint room to ensure retread truck tyres of the best quality reach the market.
