Complete Information about Bromine

Business
Bromine is an element that is a member of the halogen family along with fluorine, chlorine, iodine and astatine. In the periodic table, it is located in group 7 of the chlorine, and iodine. In chemistry, it is indicated by the symbol Br. Bromine was discovered in the year 1826th interestingly, two researchers isolated the element at the same time, but they worked independently. This nonmetallic element derived its name from the Greek word "bromines' meaning stench. It is well known that bromine has a strong, irritating odor. Let’s have a look at other facts about this element in the following section.

Bromine Facts for Kids

The physical and chemical properties of bromine are quite unique. Pair of such important characteristics of the element is as follows.

Elemental bromine can be identified as a thick liquid having a reddish brown color and a strong smell. In fact, the only nonmetal in the periodic table that can be found in a liquid state at room temperature. Although it is quite volatile in nature and easily changed to a red vapor with a pungent smell.

Basically, bromine abundantly found in nature. However, it is not found in a free state and is available in the form of the bromide salts. These salts are very soluble in water and are accumulated in the water. For this reason, the main source of bromine seawater from which it is extracted for commercial purposes. The U.S., Israel and China are the highest producers of the chemical element.

Its atomic number is 35 and its atomic mass is 79.90. The number of electrons per shell: 2, 8, 18, 7 As the electronic distribution of the element indicates that it takes only an electron to complete octet in its outermost shell. Because of this, the pure form of bromine widely available as diatomic molecule of formula Br 2.

Bromine was dissolved in water, but it has higher solubility in various organic solvents such as methanol, carbon disulfide, aliphatic alcohols, acetic acid, etc.

Compared with other halogens such as fluorine or chlorine, bromine, is slightly less reactive in nature. Because of its strong oxidizing properties, reacts with metals quite strongly, especially if it takes place in the presence of water to form bromide salts. It also shows high reactivity towards organic compounds, especially under intensive light.

Use of Bromine

Although it was discovered in 1826, was bromine extracted on a large scale only in 1860, but its usage started much before that. A purple secretion obtained from specific mollusks was used as a dye. But no one knew then that it was a bromine compound. Today, bromine and its compounds have many other important applications. It has excellent bleaching properties and is used as a disinfectant for swimming pools. It is used to prepare the brominated vegetable oil is added to the citrus-flavored soft drinks. A major industrial application of this element is the production of brominated flame retardant. It consists of hydrobromic acid, which is made of hydrogen and bromine. It plays a major role in blocking the reaction between the oxygen and the fire control and flames. Several bromide compounds used as a component in water treatment compounds, clothing dyes, flame retardants in plastics, drilling fluids, etc. Potassium is widely used for the purpose of photographic developers. Here, it serves as a source of bromide ions which are necessary for the production of silver bromide is used in the photographic film.

Hope you enjoy reading about the interesting bromine facts in this article. Bromine is toxic in nature and causes skin irritation if it comes into direct contact with the skin. Therefore it should be handled with great care. Still, if you get exposed to bromine accident, then you should wash your body with soap and water and visit a doctor immediately.
