Having children seems like such a good idea before the doctor tells you just months before the big day that you're "having a daughter." That's not to say that sons are all peaches, but daughters bring with them their own set of challenges. As a guy who has never known or cared about fashion and a balding dad who still wears t-shirts from concerts he attended 25 years ago, trying to learn about various apparel for women has been challenging to say the least. Something tells me there was a simpler time. Blaming the rise in popularity of women's sports would be short sided, but who knew all of the apparel for women that is required to play the same sports that I did as a kid would be so complicated? Whether it be running or dancing, traveling or lounging, going to school or attending a religious service, the apparel for women that seems to be required is beyond anything I ever needed, wanted, or even knew existed. Besides a rare trip to the beach where I need a pair of shorts and a hat or an occasional business meeting where a suit is required, I can wear the same couple pair of jeans with t-shirts, or khaki pants and dress shirts that I have been wearing for decades. The belt I wear virtually everyday my mom purchased before I moved away to college. My favorite fleece, which celebrates the 90th US Open Golf Tournament, has been with me for more than 20 years. I buy new shoes from time to time but only because I'd rather spend the cash to get new ones than pay the same amount to repair their worn out soles. Sometimes I think my daughter is allergic to the things that she buys. She spends lots of time and money shopping, wears an item once, and then refuses to ever look at it again. I have clothing that has been worn hundreds if not thousands of times. We may be able to sell half of her closest as new since most of the items have barely been touched. As much as I don't really understand how something can be great one minute and obsolete the next, I am really impressed by much of the apparel for women. Clothing, equipment, and accessories are produced that flatter a woman's figure and help them to best be able to feel comfortable and excel in whatever endeavor they are taking on. Men's clothing seems to have remained more or less the same for many years. Women's clothing has evolved not only stylistically, but also practically. Having a daughter is wonderful in many ways. Unfortunately, I don't think her dad is ever going to be hip. Thankfully our differences are manageable, and we'll just have to agree to disagree on what shirts are cool.
