Simple Guard Dog Training Tips You Can Follow

Business
Dogs are designed to defend or attack. This is their innate nature especially when it concerns territory. A properly trained dog knows when to attack or stay on the owner’s command. It’s an intensive training process but one which can literally save your life in bad situations.

Guard dogs are regularly used by security forces around the world. Attacking is only a small part of what they can do. These loyal animals can track and sniff out contraband on command. Others are trained to take care of people with physical and mental problems. More are trained to serve as companions to children and the elderly. This versatility is what makes dogs the perfect animals for real-life applications.

Most guard dogs are trained at professional obedience schools. However, not every dog owner may have access to these services. In the absence of an obedience school, it’s vital that owners shoulder the responsibility of properly training their dog.

• Socialize. Socialize here means familiarizing your dog with other animals in the house, family members and people who visit often. Do this from a young age when aggression hasn’t reared its head. The more a dog gets to know other animals and people, the sooner he will realize who’s friend and who’s foe.

• Teach obedience. This means basic commands like sit, stay, come and no. Sophisticated commands like ‘attack’ are more difficult to accomplish without risking physical injury to yourself. Know that once a dog understands basic commands, follows them, and distinguishes familiar faces from strangers, it will automatically protect you in case of home invasions and break-ins.

• Use treats. Give treats and pet him as a reward for good behavior and don’t give any if he doesn’t follow commands. Refrain from hitting. Once he starts associating treats with obedience, he’s more likely to follow commands. Be prepared to continue this for a long period and when obedience starts to come easily, reduce the number of treats till you don’t have to give him anymore.

Once he’s weaned off treats as a reward, petting him will be reward enough.

• Be the primary caregiver. This means be the one or appoint a member of the family to be the food provider. Don’t allow others to feed your dog. Burglars frequently use food to distract dogs and if yours feels that it’s safe to take it from anyone, he won’t be able to act as a proper guard dog.

• Introduce boundaries. Boundaries refer to the perimeter of your property. While your dog should prevent trespassers from entering, he should learn not to chase them once they leave the vicinity. You can introduce him to boundaries by walking him around the perimeter regularly. Once he understands where your property (his territory) ends, he’ll know not to pursue someone when they leave the perimeter.

• Where to bite. Your dog should know what part of an intruder to attack. Teach him to differentiate between clothing and skin by dangling your sleeve and commanding it to ‘get’. Once he does, command him to stop. Remove his mouth if he doesn’t stop when you tell him to.

Home training cannot take the place of professional training which should be sought no matter what breed of dog you have and if there’s access to a training school.
