Today vintage pieces are becoming increasingly popular. One of the literally hottest items in this trend is vintage light bulbs. You can find bulbs in trendy west-side restaurants, home retailers, steampunk-styled rooms, and many other places. Though there are many different types of vintage bulbs that you can get, they all are basically exposed-filament light bulbs that mimic Thomas Edison’s first electric bulbs. A few of the types you can find in antique stores or online are decorative chandelier, radio style, Victorian, globe, Edison style, tubular, candelabra, and even colored antique bulbs. Upsides to Using Vintage Bulbs There are a few reasons that many people today like to use antique bulbs. One is that the light it sheds makes colors appear more accurately than they do under other light sources. Some people like to use a vintage bulb near valuables because it doesn’t have mercury in it. If a fluorescent bulb were to break over their valuables, the mercury would cover the items and ruin them. Incandescent bulbs don’t have this problem. Other people use vintage bulbs because they own some kind of vintage light fixture. Using a normal bulb just wouldn’t have the same, classic effect that using an antique bulb does. Downsides to Using Vintage Bulbs Although they are very popular and do have quite a few upsides, there are a few downsides to these old-fashioned bulbs as well. One is that a vintage bulb has a pretty short lifespan. Instead of lasting around 6,000 to 10,000 hours like a newer bulb, often a 100-watt Edison bulb will only last around 1,500 hours. Another downside is how expensive they are. You can expect to pay around $10 to $20 per light bulb depending on where you buy them. They can also heat up very quickly and waste a lot of energy.
