Concrete is a building material that has many applications and most construction jobs will typically use it. While larger projects tend to use ready mix concrete prepared at a central plant and delivered in trucks, this may not be a viable option on smaller projects. For these a portable concrete mixer can be a more appropriate choice and these are commonly available. A portable concrete mixer is a piece of construction equipment that is used to produce small batches of concrete, typically up to a maximum of around 2 to 3 cubic yards. It comprises a rotating drum that is usually electrically powered and which is set on a base with wheels to make it easy to move around. The raw materials of cement, water and aggregate are placed directly into the drum and the rotating motion mixes them evenly to produce the concrete. The rotating drum is equipped with a tilting mechanism such that when the concrete is ready it can be tipped out into a container such as wheelbarrow to take it to where it is needed. Smaller models can have a capacity of as little as around 3 to 5 cubic feet, whereas the larger models on the market can have a capacity of up to 2 to 3 cubic yards (54 to 81 cubic feet). Smaller models will typically be set on a frame with two wheels and can be moved around by hand. Large models are more usually set on a base with four wheels and are a little more cumbersome to move around by hand, although will have a towing bar attached such that they can be pulled behind a vehicle. Many construction companies that will have constant work available for a mobile concrete mixer will purchase, although there are many cases where renting one may be a more affordable option. Many homeowners undertake small DIY projects which need concrete to complete and renting a mobile concrete mixer for a short period of time is usually the best option for this. If your preference is to purchase a portable concrete mixer there are a number of companies that have them for sale. Examples include Portamix and Mixright, both of which have mobile concrete mixers available in a few different sizes. Costs for purchasing can range from the $100 to $300 mark for smaller models to in excess of $20, 000 for mobile concrete mixers with the largest capacities. If you need to rent a portable concrete mixer there are a few plant hire firms that provide this service. These include companies such as United Rental, Sunbelt Rentals and Home Depot Rentals to name a few. The cost will typically depend on the size of the mixer and the period it is to be rented for and most companies that provide the service will be happy to give quotes. A portable concrete mixer is excellent equipment for smaller construction projects and remote locations which are inaccessible to concrete trucks.
