Experience: Two years of experience that demonstrates the applicant"sability to perform the work, or provides familiarity with the work. The following educational/training substitutions areappropriate in this provision for combining education andexperience: (a) Successful completion of an associate"s degree in a fieldof study other than medical records/health information willsubstitute for 18 months of the required experience. (b) Successful completion of a course for medical technicians,hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospitaltraining, obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forcesor the U.S. Maritime Service under close medical and professionalsupervision, may be substituted on a month-for-month basis for upto 1 year of experience. (c) Successful completion of a post-high school course of study inmedical record technology, which includes courses in anatomy,physiology, and medical record techniques and procedures, maysubstitute on a month-for-month basis for up to 1 year ofexperience. (d) Successful completion of post-high school courses for medicaladministrative personnel, obtained in a closely supervised trainingprogram given by the Armed Forces, may be substituted forexperience on a month-for-month basis for up to 6 months providedthe training program included courses in anatomy, physiology, andmedical record techniques and procedures. Experience: In addition to the basic requirements, one year of experiencecomparable to the GS-7 grade level for the appropriate assignmentarea and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. Medical Record Technician (Tumor Registry) Positions. This isconsidered to be the full performance level for this assignment. Certification at this grade level is highly desired . PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The incumbent must be able to exercise a high degree of emotionaland mental discipline at all times in order to continue to carryout duties effectively. This is especially necessary during timeperiods when the incumbent encounters significant or extreme duressas a result of interactions with patients, etc. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilitiesand Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessmentquestionnaire for this position: Knowledge of chronic disease registration/data basing and specificcancer registration; Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, staging of cancer, andrequirements of external approving organizations; Knowledge of the design, conduct, and interpretation of caseascertainment, re-abstracting, and quality assurance studies; Knowledge of cancer committee processes and procedures in order toimprove patient care and to verify compliance; Ability to serve as subject matter expert on cancer program issuesfor the medical center and Veterans Integrated Service Network(VISN) administration as tasked; and Ability to manage priorities and coordinate work in order tocomplete duties in an accurate and timely fashion.
