Are you dealing with constipation, eczema or irritable bowel syndrome? There is a good chance you could actually be suffering from leaky gut syndrome. In the medical world this is a problem that is seldom diagnosed as a stand-alone problem, instead it is considered a comorbid condition rather than the primary diagnosis. Before you can get into treatment options and prevention, you need to understand exactly what leaky gut is. Permeable Intestinal Lining In medical terms, leaky gut syndrome is a hyper-permeable intestine, which means the intestinal wall is letting things through that are not supposed to get through. You see the wall is porous to begin with, but when you have leaky gut, the holes are larger which permit debris such as undigested food, toxins, yeast and much more to get through the intestinal wall and out into the body. A Closer Look When you take a closer look at how the intestines are supposed to work, you get a better understanding about how leaky gut can affect your health. The outer walls of your intestines are cells connected by tight junctures. At the end of these cells are microvilli whose main function is to absorb the digested material and move them through the cells and into your bloodstream. When things are working like they are supposed to, the tight junctures will remain closed during the digestive process, which filters materials and only allows them to pass through the mucosa cells. If you have leaky gut syndrome these tight junctions fail to filter and toxins begin leaking into the body. What Happens Next As the toxins and materials enter the blood stream, your body goes on high alert attempting to fight off the intruders. First up to bat is the liver but most of the time even working overtime it will not be able to keep up with the steady stream of material. Which means your immune system will be jumping into the fray. When your immune system starts fighting the first weapon in the arsenal is inflammation. Now, while the immune system focuses on this job some of the other smaller battles get ignored. Before it is all said and done, your body is fighting constantly against itself and autoimmune disorders can set in. Final Thoughts Leaky gut syndrome symptoms will vary from one person to the next, symptoms can include constipation, diarrhea, rashes and excessive fatigue. If you think you might be suffering from leaky gut, your doctor can administer the proper testing, though you may have to specifically request it. Many times the best treatment option is a drastic change in diet, eliminating sugars, starches and grains.
