There are over 200,000 active, practicing attorneys in California and many of these claim to practice personal injury law and specifically in and around the Los Angeles area. So, the question becomes how to select a quality injury lawyer if you or someone you love has been involved in a motor vehicle accident or other traumatic event that caused bodily harm or wrongful death. The truth is that, while there are many attorneys that claim to be "experts" in the area of injury law, there are very few who actually have the experience, accolades and results that truly indicate that they will do everything in their power to get the maximum compensation for the claim. Like any other need for a service professional, the best means to select a lawyer for an injury claim is to do your research. There are many rating services that conduct independent research on the reputation of attorneys. These include the AVVO rating service and award rating services such as Thomson Rueters "Super Lawyer". You should also always check prior client testimonials and any history of discipline with any agency including the State Bar of California. The good news is that most all of this initial background checking can be done easily online through the various websites or even just general Google searches of the name of the attorney or their firm. From there, it is always best to speak with the attorney directly. If you call their office and are not allowed to speak with an actual lawyer, this should be a red flag! Only lawyers (not "legal assistants" or "paralegals") have the education and training necessary to analyze your particular claim and explain to you how they will go about prosecuting the claim for money damages. At the end of the conversation, you should not only feel confident in the lawyer's abilities but, also in their demeanor. The average personal injury claim takes a minimum of 6-9 months to resolve and some claims that have to be litigated in court may not resolve for a year or two. This is a long time to be spending interacting with an accident attorney and their office so, it is important to choose wisely from the start!
