Bunk beds are great space savers because they’re built vertically rather than side-by-side. They’re especially ideal for young children who share a room that’s small to medium in size. The choices of bunk beds depend on style. Functionality is basically the same although some designs feature additional components that utilize space exceptionally well. For example, a cleverly designed bed may have a small space for a workstation built in or a study table that children can use. This leaves space for the installation of a second workstation/study table somewhere else in the room. Bookcases and cabinets are other configurations. Built-in storage such as drawers for placing bed linens are fairly common. With futon bunk beds, emphasis is placed more on achieving multiple purposes rather than sleeping. But instead of building study tables or cabinets, the lower bunk is a full-sized futon used for reclining or sitting while the top half is used for sleeping. The style is more suitable for one-child bedrooms that don’t have a lot of space or even small guest bedrooms that combine features of a bedroom and a casual living room. Where basic bunk beds and futon bunk beds have two sleeping areas, loft beds have only one on the top. The bottom area is left free to house study tables, workstations, cabinets and even small play areas. The configuration is great for small rooms where customization is intended as you’re left with sufficient space to place whatever you want beneath. Bunk beds are typically designed for children aged six or older. Younger children should be made to sleep on the lower bunk for safety. Guard rails are important on both beds as are headrests and footrests. Safety wires beneath the top bunk to act as additional support are also necessary. Ladders too should be solid and preferably attached rather than independent. No matter what style you choose, make sure it combines all these precautions. Wood and metal are the two safest choices in bed materials. Wood has been used for decades and is very sturdy. However, price can reach exorbitant rates especially if the bed boasts additional features like cabinets. Metal is cheaper and also durable but can develop squeaks over time. Since safety is of utmost concern, always select beds that pass the ‘shake’ test. They must not wobble when climbing and should be able to support playful movements of children. If additional components are added, make sure the frame of the setup is able to support the weight of the components, the beds, children and mattresses.
