If you're looking to escape from the same old dinner and a movie routine you've been stuck in for the last decade, you should check out what's going on at your local theater. No, not that place with over priced popcorn and drinks... I'm talking about the magical place where live human beings are performing repertories ranging from comedies to tragedies to musicals, and even ballet! In order to gain entrance to this magical place, you have to first have a ticket. And in order to have a ticket, you need to pick a performance that you are interested in. And in order to pick the performance you wish to attend, you need to know what your options are. Phew, that was a mouthful! Performance venues near you are probably selling tickets for various Broadway and off-Broadway (and off-off- Broadway) productions put on by different companies. To keep up with the productions and performances going on in your area, you can sign up for email alerts with different playhouses, regularly check your local theater's event calendar, or just pay attention to the news. Knowing which productions are occurring and when they are occurring takes you a step closer in gaining access to the magical place of live theater. You now have to choose a performance that interests you, fits into your schedule, and fits into your budget. Seems easy enough, right? Wrong. You would be surprised at how many people end up buying tickets for shows that bore them to death, or worse, shows that they can't attend because they double booked their time. However, if you're lucky enough to get tickets to a show that you are able to go to and really want to see; there are a few etiquette related considerations to keep in mind. Do make sure to dress appropriately. You don't want to show up to a formal ballet performance in jeans and a t-shirt, and you don't want to show up to a casual neighborhood production in a ball gown. Don't be late, and if you're late, don't be conspicuous. Give yourself enough time to get to the theater and settle in. If you do end up being late, don't distract other audience members with a loud entrance. Do turn off all electronics. Yes, Turn. Off. You'll survive without the latest tweet from your favorite celebrity about what they're currently doing. So for a recap... To escape staring at moving pictures of people doing stuff for 2 hours, find out about the live productions being put on and hosted by your local theater. Whether you want to laugh your butt off, cry your eyes out, or just stare at some 3d human beings for a change; you're bound to find a performance that peaks your interest. Oh, and one last piece of etiquette advice? Clap! Let the performers know that you enjoyed the show! And if you didn't enjoy the show, clap to let the performers know you acknowledge and appreciate their valiant effort to entertain you. Looking for a East Brunswick theater?
