Even though in New Jersey the average rainfall in a year is about 45 inches, there is still great concern about the availability of fresh water in the near future especially in South Jersey. Because this region has always been abundant in water, it has been taken for granted and its usage has become absurd. In the southern New Jersey region and more exactly the Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem counties, water is discarded after one usage, which is a luxury we should not afford considering the fact that once discarded in the ocean that water cannot be used anymore without desalinization. This was the moment when the first NJ Statewide Water Supply Plan, the Water Supply Management Act and NJ Water Supply Bond were brought to discussion. The laws chanced significantly in the past few years, but the habits of the community living in South Jersey did not change much over the years. In order to protect the water supply, many organizations from this area have started to raise awareness about water availability issues in the future. They try to convince people to reduce their consumption where and when possible and to teach them how to do so. For instance, they are advised to appeal to hardscape services when they design their lawn, because that will reduce their water needs significantly.
