Have you ever noticed that the best speaking voices in the business are deep, rich, and warm? Think of those actors – both men and women – who are known for having a great sound. Who is your favorite? James Earl Jones or Sean Connery or George Clooney? How about Angelina Jolie, Felicia Rashad, or Kathleen Turner? All of these voices are deep in pitch – not high. One of the greatest and definitely the sexiest of the voices was the late Barry White. Whether the man was speaking or singing, his voice was incredibly sensual and one of the most alluring sounds I’ve ever heard. Is it possible that you have a deeper, sexier speaking voice? Absolutely. You may not have quite the depth of James Earl Jones, but you definitely have a deeper voice inside of you. You will need to break a few habits and instill some new ones, but if you want to find that voice, it will be worth it. What you need to do is to learn to power your voice from your chest cavity. All of the actors mentioned above power their voice in this manner. Most other people do not. They rely on their throat and vocal cords to do most of the work. The result is a higher pitch and a thinner quality. Other descriptions could include: weak, wimpy, nasal, reedy, throaty, whispery, soft, loud, or harsh. Once you power your voice from your chest cavity, however, none of those adjectives will describe your voice because the sound which is coming from the chest is full of resonance. It has depth and breadth. The voice which is coming from the throat possesses neither depth nor breadth. And the only resonance you might hear is that which is coming through the nose! In order to find your deeper voice, you need to do these 3 things: 1. Learn to breathe with the support of your diaphragm because you need to fill your entire lungs with air – not just the upper portion of your lungs. 2. Find the optimum pitch of your speaking voice. This will be different for every individual and is found in the lower register of your speaking range. 3. Practice speaking from your chest and not from your throat once you are breathing and have found your optimum pitch. There is no doubt that a deep voice in both men and women is a lot sexier than one which is high in pitch. You have it in you. You just need to find it.
