Fire Restoration Tips

Business
Introduction

After the devastation of a fire, there is a sizable secondary task after replacing all destroyed property. This entails cleaning up the tremendous amount of damage caused by the smoke from that fire. Read the following tips on how to preform fire damage cleanup in everything from carpets to clothing.

The Steps

1. Always put on the proper safety equipment, including a face mask and gloves when preforming fire damage cleanup.

2. Start your cleaning process promptly. The longer the wait the more damages develops also the longer your house and household items sit, the more difficult it will be to remove smoke damage.

3. Ventilate your house well by opening windows and running fans.Even if only a small portion of the house was affected by fire, smoke can permeate a greater area. Your cleaning will be more effective if everything is aired out well.

4. Throw away any perishable food that might have been exposed to smoke.

5. Remove and clean any brass or copper items using a brass or copper-specific cleaner.

6. Suck up soot using a vacuum cleaner attachment nozzle.Place the nozzle several inches from the soot. Don't use an upright vacuum as this tends to grind the soot into the carpet. Soot stains easily, so it should be cleaned up before any further deodorizing or cleaning occurs.

7. Clean appliances thoroughly with a disinfectant.Smoke can cause malfunctions in the appliance mechanisms, so clean and test until the appliances run smoothly.

8. Change the air filter on your air conditioner as a great deal of soot will have built up in the filter after exposure to smoke damage.

9. Clean areas of wall that are discolored by the smoke. After opening the windows to ensure ventilation, apply paint thinner or rubbing alcohol. If stains persist, repaint the stained walls. 10. Deodorize all linens, fabrics or clothing that were exposed to smoke.

11. Combine 1 cup dishwashing detergent in 1 gallon (about 3.7 liters) warm water and submerge affected items in the mixture overnight.

12. Wash all linens, fabrics or clothing that were exposed to smoke.

13. For larger items such as quilts or comforters, you might need to visit a Laundromat. Re the individual labels for items that need to be dry-cleaned. For the best results, tell your dry cleaner they need to clean smoke damage from the articles.

14. Consult a professional cleaner about large items such as furniture.

15. Clean books that have been affected by smoke.Focus on the edges and spines as these are the areas most exposed to smoke.Wipe the books with a dry sponge.Handle them gently, as books exposed to smoke could be brittle.Apply a small amount of mild cleaning agent to the sponge and clean the hard parts of the book. This should not be applied, of course, to any of the paper.

Conclusion

If the damage is too extensiveand all seems lost, please consult a professional trained in fire damage cleanup. Do not attempt on your own if there is the possibility of getting injured.
