COLOMBO, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan authorities are to compensate over 2,000 vehicle owners after sub standard petrol distributed by the state owned petroleum agency damaged vehicles recently. The state owned Ceylon Petroleum Corporation said Tuesday that it had received just over 2,000 written complaints from vehicle owners who were affected by the sub standard petrol. A spokesman at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation told Xinhua that based on a committee recommendation a maximum of Rs. 50,000 (455 U.S. dollars) will be paid to each vehicle owner as compensation. The spokesman said the compensation will be paid within two weeks after a committee appointed by the Sri Lankan government on Monday found the state owned petroleum agency at fault for distributing the poor quality petrol. The committee said the proper procurement procedures were not followed when purchasing 20,000 metric tons of petrol, of which 513 metric tons were released to the market. Hundreds of vehicles began to malfunction on Sri Lankan roads in June this year and it was later found that substandard petrol pumped at fuel stations operated by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation was the cause for the malfunction. Fuel pumps at those fuel stations had also been damaged forcing motorists to purchase fuel from private petrol stations including those operated by an Indian oil company.
