Visiting a Physical Therapist

Health

Your body is an amazing entity with everything working together well to perform optimally. It is fantastic, until something goes wrong and you lose your ability to function the way you normally might. This can be one of the most frustrating things in life. Unfortunately, there are many things that can throw your body's function and abilities off. Some of the most common injuries occur to backs, wrists, and knees. If you find yourself in this situation, you might wonder whether or not you should go to a physical therapist. Here are a few things you should know about physical therapy in NYC and some reasons to visit one.

When to Go

If you injure or sprain part of your body, it is best to wait a few days. If at all possible, try to elevate your injured body part and try to ice it at 4 different times of the day. It is helpful to leave the ice on for about 20 minutes every time you ice it. If, after 3 or 4 days, the pain is still lingering, then it is probably time to go to a physical therapist for an evaluation. One common occurrence with pain from injuries is that you can think that it has improved and gone away. However, when you try to resume your normal activities or athletics, the pain returns, most commonly in a dull ache sort of way. If your pain does go away from rest or icing the injury, but returns whenever you resume activities, it is probably your body's way of letting you know that the injury needs to be addressed. Until you find out what is going and the injury heals, you will continue to have sporadic dull pain.

Types of Injuries

A physical therapist can see patients dealing with all sorts of different issues. A physical therapist works under the ideology that the whole body works together, around the spine, operating and functioning in full capacity. If one area is out of sorts, then it affects the overall function. You can go in to a physical therapist to be treated from everything from your jaw muscles down to your toes. If you aren't sure whether or not your injury is treatable from a physical therapist, you can always call an office ahead of time to ask. Other injuries are more obvious when they occur.

Muscle tears and broken bones are easy to spot and diagnose and are brought on by one single traumatic event. In these cases, when you know where and how you injured yourself, it is best to be seen by a physical therapist for an evaluation and to set up a treatment plan. Many types of injuries are caused by the swelling of muscles and joints. If you are taking an anti-inflammatory drug for the swelling, and the over-the-counter medication doesn't do anything for you, then it is time to go in and see a physical therapist.

Covered by Insurance

If you have a physical issue or injury that needs addressing, it is best to see a physical therapist before it gets worse. If you try to deal with the pain or resume activities as normal, then you might injure yourself worse. Thankfully, if you have medical insurance, most plans cover a certain number of visits to physical therapists a year. Even when people have met the maximum number of visits in a year, more visits can often be granted with prior authorization from your physical therapist.

If you have an injury and need an evaluation, then physical therapy in NYC could be an option for you.
