12 Weird Things that Can Happen to Your Pool

Home Improvement

In the world of swimming pools, fun and relaxation are supreme. Sure, swimming is excellent exercise and pools can add stunning beauty to your yard, but swimming pools just scream relaxation. They are the cornerstones of spas, resorts, elegant backyard retreats, and other settings devoted to the art of the slow, satisfied exhale: "Ahhh."

However, a few strange and icky problems can get in the way of your relaxing pool time, turning what should be an enjoyable swim into a horrid experience that will keep you out of your pool for weeks to come.

Sure, there are some common problems that pool owners can come to expect, such as leaves in the water or scummy film developing on the tile walls and floor. Those issues are commonplace and routine; a swimming pool inspection in Alpharetta can easily identify and repair these simple issues. Often, though, some unexpected and strange problems can plague a pool, turning it into a metaphorical snake pit of unsettling issues. Keep an eye out for the following:

  1. Mosquito eggs are about as unwanted as anything can be. Just the thought of insect babies squirming around a pool can give even the most steely individuals a serious case of goosebumps. This is usually a sign that your pool water is either not cycling through the filter or its disinfectant is no longer potent.
  2. Green water is a strong clue that your water is either not being filtered and cleaned or that foreign matter has been allowed to dissolve into the water. Even worse, it might mean that your water has dangerous mildew or algae in it.
  3. Mildewy water, like green water, can be too dangerous for human contact. Mildew can develop in unkept pools or can sprout as a consequence of simple bad luck. Few, if any, pools are immune.
  4. Tile loss is a huge bummer. The beautiful and neat tiles on your pool wall or floor can slip right out of place, exposing the delicate lining underneath. Fungal spores can simply rot your tiles out of place or blunt force can crack and loosen them.
  5. One day, you may slip on your swimsuit, stroll outdoors for a relaxing swim, step in, and find a dead animal floating past. This is actually a common occurrence; mice, squirrels, and birds are frequent victims. Water that has hosted a dead, dirty, and wild creature will obviously need some seriously cleaning before it is safe for human use again.
  6. Loose railing can lead to 1 of 2 situations: a hilarious incident of someone tripping face-first into cold water or a fragile individual falling and seriously injuring themselves. Metal railings are treated to prevent rusting, but over time, these important metal pieces can begin to break down, loosening them.
  7. Slippery steps can also lead to potentially funny or terrible falls. A wet bathroom floor will obviously be slippery, but pool steps are built to give bare feet vital traction so you can safely step into deeper waters. Unfortunately, fungal matter and other foreign buildup can make these surfaces extremely slippery.
  8. Do you have dirty water that just won't get clean? Your filter might simply be drinking dirty water and spitting it back out unchanged.
  9. Stinky water makes for incredibly unpleasant swims. Like a mop bucket that never gets emptied, dirty pool water that sits for extended periods of time or is hosting foreign life forms can reek of rot and dirt.
  10. A noisy filter can be a huge disturbance to your relaxation time. Certain problems with your filter can cause it to make highly mechanical, strained, and loud noises. It is an unsettling experience and you may want to have your filter looked at immediately, lest it break completely.
  11. Soapy water is an odd sight, usually attributed to the overuse of algaecides--chemical formulas that prevent the presence and growth of algae in your pool. A balanced amount of algaecide is perfectly healthy but if you are too heavy-handed with it you can find yourself swimming in a dirty bathtub full of toxic suds.
  12. Pool wall erosion, especially common in concrete or gunite pools, is highly problematic. If you have saltwater in your pool, it will be especially prone to problems. The walls can become rough and misshapen, making for a very unpleasant swim. Foot and hand scrapes are an obvious sign of wall erosion.

If you find yourself the victim of any of the 12 problems above, call experts for a swimming pool inspection in Alpharetta to diagnose problems, repair them, and return your pool to its natural state: a clean, refreshing, and soothing place to swim.
