Muong Lo valley Muong Lo is a rich fertile land in the North West region of Vietnam, where the fields are flat, wide straight till the horizon. The land is famous for "clear water and white rice” in the country", with specialty tea Shan of the passionate fragrance of glutinous Tu Le. Muong Lo is surrounded by Hoang Lien Son range covered by cloud all year round. Muong Lo covers an area of 3,000 ha and it is also the place where 17 ethnic minorities live and has the total population of 27,000 people. In which, Thai minority occupies 44% with mystery in culture that make tourist always want to discover. Muong Lo attracts tourists also because of soft lyrics and beautiful melodies of Luon songs and Xoe dancing. To be one of the four valleys which are famous for beautiful scenery and fresh air in the North West region, Muong Lo field is ranked at the second, only after Muong Thanh in Dien Bien and before Muong Than in Than Uyen, Lai Chau and Muong Tac in Phu Yen, Son La. Muong Lo now is included of Nghia Lo commune and some other communes of Van Chan district. From above, Muong Lo field looks like a huge pan, surrounding is the mountainous area. In spring, fog becomes very thick here. In the harvest season, the terraced rice fields here look like golden carpets. The Black Thai has been living here for a long time. According to the epic story of the Thai people, the 2 brothers Tao Xuong and Tao Ngan who found place to set a business. Tao Xuong chose Muong Lo and for he found that this land was very fertile and had water source. He became the ancestor of the Black Thai people. While Tao Ngan was up to Muong Then (Muong Thanh nowadays) to build the villages of the White Thai and mainly cultivated wet rice. Muong Lo specialities: Tu Le sticky rice and Muong Lo ordinary rice have been so famous even out of this region to many other places in Vietnam. Besides the rice, Muong Lo is also well-known for delicious and special dishes that tourists can’t forget after tasting them. Moss dish: To the Thai people in Muong Lo, moss dish is only to treat special guests. Moss is cooked in different styles such as: grilled moss, fried moss…but the most unique dish is the mixing dish of moss and many different spices, some kinds of nuts here, lemon leaves, ginger, garlic, pepper, a little bit fat meat and then all wrapped in the Dong leave. Bring all buried in the warm ashes with no coal and no fire till the outside leave is burnt, then dry all on charcoal. Dried buffalo meat Buffalo meat is cleaned and then cut into pieces of the size: 7 cm x 2 cm x 0.15 cm. Then, all pieces will be beaten to become softer. Next Thai people will chop lemon grass, ginger, garlic, chilli nuts and put into a big bowl then mix with the meat and leave them for 2 to 3 hours. After that, Thai people will use strings to hang the meat on the kitchen. The meat will become dry gradually because of the heat of the spices and the smoke from the kitchen. People can eat the meat after 2 to 3 months. But before eating, people have to cook one more time by grilling it on the kitchen. The meat will be more delicious if you eat it will the sauce made from fish sauce with lemon, garlic, chilli and sugar. Five-colour Steamed Glutinous Rice In the tray of offering of the Thai people, it never miss five-colour steamed glutinous rice which is made of white rice and dyed of different colors: green, red, purple, yellow (kh?u c?m khiêu, kh?u c?m lanh, kh?u c?m lam, kh?u c?m luong...), the colors of “kh?u c?m” are made from plants, leaves, natural herbs that are not harmful to the health of the eaters. According to the Thai conception, 5 colors represent the colors of all the objects in the world. So they want to dedicate everything of the heaven and the earth that people can get for their ancestors or gods. On the other hand, it also has an educational meaning to educate children to remember their roots and live towards their ancestors. How to get there: It’s 200km from Hano so you have many choice to get there: (1) take a overnight bus from My Dinh Bus Station; (2) Book a tour from list of Vietnam Motorbike Tours of ADV Vietnam Motorcycle Tours and Dirtbike Travel; (3) rent a motorbike then ride yourself.
