The Differences between Sleep Walking, Night Terrors, and Nightmares

Sleep walking, night terrors, and nightmares are 3 fairly common sleep-related issues, but the lines that distinguish them from one another are often blurred. If you suffer from any of these problems, it's important that you understand the differences so that you can receive the proper sleep treatment in Birmingham. Nightmares

Everyone is familiar with nightmares, because everyone suffers from them from time to time. A nightmare is often just referred to as a "bad dream." In essence, it is a dream state that escalates into frightening events and often ends by frightening the dreamer into wakefulness. People of all ages and from all walks of life can suffer from nightmares; even infants can have nightmares when they are just a few weeks old! However, if you have persistent nightmares that interrupt your sleep on a regular basis, you may want to speak to a sleep specialist about receiving help.

Night Terrors

While night terrors and nightmares are often confused, they are actually 2 distinct problems. While night terrors often result in a person waking up in a state of fear--just like a nightmare--the sudden fear and wakefulness are actually not caused by a dream. Night terrors are simply a state of terror and confusion that occur upon waking, without any clear instigating factor. Those who suffer from night terrors will often jolt into wakefulness, feeling disoriented and frightened, without any idea why. Children can suffer from this disorder as well, and often require long periods of soothing before they are calm enough to go back to sleep.

If you or a family member suffers from night terrors, there are treatment options available. However, it is important to note that children will often outgrow their night terrors, so it may be best to wait it out rather than putting them on any treatment plans. Talk to your doctor about the options.

Sleep Walking

Sleep walking is a term used to refer to any activity that is done while the person is asleep and unaware of their actions. This may include simple tasks like eating and cleaning, or the person may act out strange scenarios that are occurring in their minds. Sleep walking is often innocent, but can be linked to bad dreams that cause the person to act out violently.
