Has your child expressed a love for all things related to the ocean? Does your child want to know everything there is to know about marine life? If so, you may find it hard to encourage this passion. After all, it's not as if you have a boat to take out every day. If you want to encourage your child to pursue a love of marine biology, check out this list of activities to try. Summer Camps There are several marine biology summer camps available for children. You can enroll them for a few days or several weeks, depending on your children's availability and your budget. These summer camps allow children to get hands-on experience with marine life. They will go out on a boat and learn to identify various forms of marine life. They will be able to handle ocean-dwelling animals and participate in activities that real marine biologists would engage in, like logging the migratory patterns of whales. Your child will also have the opportunity to interact with other children who share their passions. This can encourage them to pursue marine biology seriously by allowing them to discuss their love for marine biology with their peers. Wading Pools If you live near the ocean, or can take a trip there, find some wading pools to take your children to. If you go at the right time of day, the wading pools will be full of marine life for your children to observe. From small fish to sea stars, sea urchins, and other marine animals, they will be able to see some incredible sea critters. Encourage your children to log the types of marine life they see in a journal. You may even want to let them take pictures for their log book. This will let them feel like a real marine biologist, and when they get back home, they can do research on the internet to learn more about the types of animals they found in the wading pools. Amusement Parks Many marine amusement parks offer interactive programs for adults and children. This can include opportunities to swim with dolphins, feed sea otters, and even play with beluga whales and sea lions. If there is an amusement park in your area, contact the park to find out if they have these types of programs. Some will even have summer camps where kids can attend and engage in educational programs to learn more about sea life and possible careers related to marine biology. Whale Watching Look into booking a spot for you and your child on a whale watching tour in your area. These professional tours will take you to common locations where dolphins, whales, and sea lions congregate. Tour guides will even help you learn how to identify different species of whale based on fins and flukes. While all of these activities will help to encourage your child's love of marine biology, none of them will give your child the same hands-on experience as marine biology summer camps.
