The City of Atlanta was crushed and devastated after Major General Sherman destroyed the city in his infamous "March to the Sea" in the fall of 1864. Nevertheless, Atlanta's citizens rebuilt after the Civil War and today the "Empire City of the South" has some of the most stunning neighborhoods to be found in any major urban city. Over 75 historic districts are scattered throughout the charming rolling hills of Georgia incorporated within the city. Atlanta general contractors who work in the city certainly are familiar with many of these neighborhoods and the assortment of architectural styles distinctive of the homes in these communities. One neighborhood of note is the community of Inman Park. Atlanta's First Suburb The history of Inman Park goes back to the Battle of Atlanta in 1864 when the area on which the neighborhood stands was part of the battlefield. Less than 25 years later, it would become Atlanta's first planned residential suburb due in no small part to the arrival of the streetcar in the 1880s and the city being the destination of Atlanta's first streetcar line. What's in a Name? In its inauspicious beginning, Inman Park was settled by many wealthy Atlanta families, not the least of whom was the Inman family, for which the suburb and now neighborhood of Atlanta was named. Though many may not recognize Samuel Inman's surname, he was a notable financier of the time who partnered with Joel Hurt, one of early Atlanta's most important builders, to form the East Atlanta Land Company, which acquired most of the land for the development. Historic Architecture Abounds Among classic architectural styles found in this nationally celebrated historic district are Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Shingle Style homes as well as bungalows. Their distinctive Victorian period features include sweeping porches, turrets, and intricate gingerbread-style woodwork. Atlanta is home to numerous historic neighborhoods, but few predominate as much as Inman Park with its characteristic styles that are familiar to many Atlanta general contractors.
