Coping With Growing Older While we all know that we are continuously growing older, what we cannot know is just how challenging this can feel – especially in the later years of our lives. Ageing is a natural physiological process that inevitably has an impact on how our body functionsand we will therefore find ourselves having to cope with the transitions and changes to our lives that are likely follow. Some Implications Of Ageing It is entirely to be expected that as we get older, our bodies will not only become more susceptible to illness or injury, but will also take longer to recover from such conditions. Even if we do not succumb to a major illness such as cancer, heart disease or dementia, in our later years we will become frailer. As we age, it is normal for our sight, hearing and energy levels to begin to fade. We may therefore find it more difficult to do household tasks such as paying bills, shopping or cleaning and where once we may have been ‘spouse’ or ‘partner’, circumstances may lead to us becoming ‘carer’ or ‘cared for’. Our sense of independence may also suffer as decreasing mobility makes it harder totravel tovisit friends or family who live some distance away - and this can lead to us feeling socially isolated and lonely. Later Life Can Be A Time Of Both Real And Imagined Changes For some of us, the need for ‘assisted living’ may arise and, while this particular change is by no means inevitable, it is an important consideration to bear in mind. Moving from your own home into long-term residential care would be a major upheaval for you, your family and friends so, instead of having to make a decision in a crisis, talking it through and findingout in advance what’s available is worth doing ‘just in case’. Finally, memory loss can be a worry for many who turn to me for Life Transition Psychotherapy. While being forgetful can happen to anyone at any age, what with scare stories in the media, it is all too easy to imagine, whenever you forget why you walked into a room, or what you were about to do, that you’re ‘getting dementia’.
