Top Tips for Those New to the Courier Business

Automotive
Taking on owner driver courier jobs can be difficult in more ways than one; so if you’re a newbie, the industry may seem a little daunting at first. Whether you’re worried about staying sane in your van all alone every day, or remembering all the correct safety regulations, take heart that you won’t be the only one.

So, for any drivers new to the business, here are some handy tips to help you on your way to becoming a more confident courier.

1. Learn the Safety Protocols

Learning the basic rules inside and out may seem like a chore, but in this industry, knowing how to handle a mishap is of the utmost importance. If you’re not sure about something, don’t be afraid to speak up and ask others in the industry – it’s much better to find out the right answer than get something drastically wrong when you’re out there on the roads.

2. Remember: First Impressions Are Important

Like in any job, being a newcomer means you might have to make additional effort in order to get off on the right foot with new associates. Making sure you are consistently punctual, efficient and polite are among the many traits you must exercise when you’re starting out – and go on the same way! This rule also applies while you’re out doing the job – a friendly manner and efficient service will ensure your customers don’t leave you with any negative reviews.

Not only are first impressions important – they last, too. Make sure you keep your hard-working attitude consistent throughout your working life. That way, you’ll be first in line when any new job opportunities arise.

3. Look After Yourself

For an owner driver, courier jobs can often feel thrilling, freeing and exhilarating, but depending on your mood, the work may also sometimes feel a little mundane. Everyone has a bad day occasionally, but some drivers tend to use these days as excuses to neglect their physical and mental health.

Avoiding fast-food chains is a vitally important tip for those who get into courier work. Bad habits will last, and you may soon find yourself feeling more fatigued and run-down due to unhealthy eating tendencies. Stay away from the easy-access food and take along some healthy snacks of your own. Get in the habit of packing a lunch box and you won’t be tempted to lapse into the bad stuff.

Another way to keep your health in check is to make sure you’re having enough sleep. Lack of sleep can result in a whole host of issues for those in the transport industry, including slower reaction times, hallucinations and headaches. This can result in extremely dangerous driving and lives being put at risk.

When it comes to owner driver courier jobs, safety (your own and others on the road) is of utmost importance. There’s no doubt that a lot of pressure is put on drivers to stay safe on the roads; taking time to learn the rules will only make your life easier.

With the correct knowledge, a positive attitude and well-maintained personal heath, you’ll be on your way to a long and happy career in the industry.
