When your daughter walks into her first gymnastics class you, of course, want her to feel confident but also be wearing clothes suitable for the activities to come. There are a range of appropriate option and it is worth checking with the teacher to check if there are any dress code requirements. Something like a gymnastics leotard and gymnastic shorts for girls is commonly chosen as they allow free movement while being safe. Here are some tips on what to avoid and what to think about. What not to wear So if you know that there are some great girls gymnastic shorts out there as an option it can also help to know what it is not. You might be surprised to see some of them mentioned. Who would wear jeans to a gymnastics class? But people do. So here are some things not to wear to class! - Jeans – they do not allow you to move well enough and the zippers and buttons scratch against things, damaging equipment and hurting people.
- Loose t-shirts – people wear this thinking they will stay cool but in fact, it is actually dangerous. They catch in equipment, they can wrap around gymnasts as they tumble and it can also put at risk whoever is spotting you.
- Socks – an odd one but also a no no in gymnastics. They cause gymnasts to slip and injure themselves.
- Tights with skirts – some think there is not much difference between tights and leggings but that is not true. The tights are not a good material to move around in and they are slippery for a spotter trying to keep you safe. Since they go over the foot there is still the issue of slipping as with socks. Skirts make it hard on the spotter or coach and get in the way which puts the gymnast and coach in danger.
Other tips to stay safe Some other tips that will help you remain accident-free and safe are; - No jewelry, apart from studs. Even small hoops can end up getting caught and ripped from an earlobe. Necklaces are a choking hazard, bracelets can catch in equipment.
- If you have long hair wear it up. Hair in the face is not just an annoyance it is a danger as it blocks your view. It can get caught in things and under your hands as you do a roll or tumble for example. Imagine it getting caught in trampoline springs or your own gymnastics shorts for girls even!
- No hair clips. Your hair should be kept up in a proper soft band, nothing hard.
Summary By following these steps and listening to your gymnastics teacher you can ensure you or your daughter is dressed safely and appropriately for class. Just another quick tip, those classes where it is okay to have gymnastics shorts for girls, make sure they are wearing underwear beneath them. Some think they are like leotards and do not need them. They do!
