How to negotiate a suitable salary?

Business,Career
Once your employer shortlists you and you are through with the main interviews or written tests if any, salary is the most crucial aspect during the final discussions. If you are unable to put your point across during this stage, you are more likely to get a lesser salary than what you wish for.

You cannot afford not learning this skill, if you want to achieve professional success says A. Harrison Barnes the CEO of Employmentcrossing.com. Negotiation skills are also required if you need to ask for a raise in your current job. Before negotiating, you must do research to know how much the job is worth. If you are applying for your first job, then knowing what other companies are offering for a similar job is even more important. During salary negotiation you should be able to convince the employer that hiring you in the salary you are asking will be surely a good deal for the company. You should not accept the salary package offered by your recruiter unless you are satisfied. At the same time, you must ask for an amount that is justifiable. Going over the board will certainly make you lose the job offer. Do ask about bonus, performance incentives and appraisal while joining. A. Harrison Barnes says that salary negotiation is different from the negotiation that one usually does while buying a car or a house for instance. You must remember at the same time that it might not be possible for the employer to suffice all your demands. The company may be fraught with numerous problems, as a result of which it may not be in a position to provide you with the benefits expected. You must do your bit and must be clear in your mind what to accept and what not to accept.

You must not start the topic of salary on your own unless the employer or HR head asks. You should discuss the salary only after being very clear in your mind about your job roles and responsibilities. Settling for what is offered to you in the first instance is the biggest mistake made by new job seekers and women employees. This will prove really frustrating in the long run, especially if the company is paying more to people who are doing the same work as yours. Don't say what you think you should get rather focus on your positive aspects and value for the company. Saying that you have large expenses to meet so you cannot work at a particular salary is the biggest salary negotiation mistake. Demonstrate how you will prove to be an asset for the company suggests A. Harrison Barnes.

Qualified candidates with strong work experience are always sought after by the recruiters. Your resume should be vivid containing all the relevant information about your educational qualifications and previous work experience says A. Harrison Barnes. Your certificates and additional training reports may help you to negotiate for better gains. But make sure that you are honest and not seeking any dishonest modes of actions for bagging the job. With a strong resume and experience, you can surely succeed in getting a well-deserving salary provided you know how to negotiate the employer.

Do not limit your negotiations to salary alone. Negotiate to flexible working hours or any other thing that is important. This is the time when you can discuss these things. Once you are on the job, getting terms and conditions of the job altered is quite difficult. A. Harrison Barnes says be clear with your demands and see that the employer incorporates as many demands as possible. Get every thing in writing from your company. The salary compensations in writing whether for a short term project or for securing long term relations with your employer can only guarantee your monetary security. There are no short cuts to success and no substitute for hard work. If you dream of reaching the top, make sure that you are working hard to achieve your end results. If you are working in shifts or performing critical tasks, you can ask for better bargains. The jobs that involve risks, deserve a better pay. The more you rise in your career, the more important the negotiation becomes.
