Summer is officially in full swing when you start revving up the grill. The fourth of the July is the most common weekend that families have grill parties. Unfortunately, the number of accidental grill fires is directly proportional to the beginning of grilling season. We take home security in Maryland, including fire protection as seriously as you do. Here at Burtel American Home Systems and American Home Security, security systems DC are our priority. Here we will discuss twelve ways that you can help prevent grill fires at your 4th of July cookout. 1. Install monitored smoke detectors. While smoke detectors that alert residents to fire when they are inside the home are as common as regular home security systems, Burtel offers a cutting-edge option in which your security system can alert you of fire when you are not home. The monitor is an easy add-on to the home security system that's already in place to protect your family. Maryland security systems and security systems DC provide this cutting edge option to cover every base possible when it comes to creating a safe haven within the home. Fire is no exception. 2. Use charcoal and propane grills outdoors only in a carefully chosen location. Make sure there are no trees overhead that could potentially catch fire. 3. Keep pets and children at least three feet away from the cooking area, so they do not accidentally knock over the grill or spill flammable liquids. 4. Be present with your grill at all times. Should you need to leave for any amount of time, ask a guest or family member to kindly watch the grill until you return. 5. Propane leaks should be carefully guarded against by checking hoses and all valves for leaks at the beginning of each year. All propane-related equipment should be stored indoors when not in use, so weather does not place excessive wear and tear on areas that could catch fire when used as a result. The way to tell if the unit is leaking is to apply a light soap and water solution to all parts. If there is a leak, the soap will bubble. If there is a leak that stops when you turn off the propane tank, have the grill repaired by a professional. Call the fire department if you are unable to stop the leak. 6. If you smell gas when cooking on your propane grill, get away from the unit. Contact the fire department. 7. If the propane light goes out, turn off the unit and wait 15 minutes before relighting it. 8. Keep both charcoal and propane grills clean by removing grease and fat buildup from the metal grill and trays below them.
9. Never add any flammable liquids to a charcoal fire to get them to light faster or stronger. 10. Use newspaper and a charcoal starter fluid to light a charcoal fire. 11. If you use an electric charcoal starter, make sure you use an electrical cord suited for outdoor use. 12. Let charcoal briquettes cool completely before putting them in a metal container for disposal when you are done grilling.
Although grilling is one of the most festive summer past times, it is also an activity that warrants proper precautions.
