WASHINGTON, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- U.S. productivity rose at a 3.1 percent annual rate in the third quarter, indicating a strengthening economic recovery, the U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday. Government data revealed that the gain in productivity reflects increases of 3.8 percent in output and 0.6 percent in hours worked in the July-September quarter this year. Unit labor costs in nonfarm businesses fell 2.4 percent as the increase in hourly compensation outpaced the increase of productivity. In the third quarter, U.S. manufacturing sector productivity grew 5.4 percent as output rose 4.7 percent and hours decreased 0.8 percent. Over the last four quarters, manufacturing productivity grew 3.0 percent. Productivity measures the amount of output per hour of work. Increases in productivity allow companies to pay workers more without being forced to boost the prices of their products, which can cause inflation. A rise in productivity usually means an increase of strength in the economy. Economists say that the U.S. economy will recover in the long run thanks to continuing increase of productivity.
