Every market in the United States has a wide variety of jobs for those that are looking for work. It seems that each city is known for having a higher concentration of jobs in a particular field, as opposed to an equal amount in all fields. For example, Los Angeles is known for its film, tech and agricultural sectors. Detroit has many auto and parts manufacturing companies while places like New York City are known for their financial institutions. The national unemployment rate has been the topic of much debate over the last five years. More people are getting back to work after the lending fiasco that swept the nation in 2007, but what types of jobs are they landing? Tulsa, Oklahoma has always been known to have an unemployment rate that has been well below the national average. Notorious as a oil and natural gas hub, it has also grown in the medical and service industry fields. I feel that the unemployment rate is a false indicator of just how well our economy thrives because, in many cases, a person that was let go from a career-type of job has been able to find work, usually in a completely different industry. The issue isn’t how many people are getting back to work. The issue is what types of jobs are the formerly laid-off employees going back to perform? Lawyers going back to work as bartenders is not a fair representation of how well the economy is doing. When I say that Tulsa jobs vary, I mean that as a subjective statement. All of us have bills that are due every month. Rent, car bills, maintenance, food and electric, just to name a few. A person that was released from their job in 2007 making a nice salary has been down on their luck and most likely had to settle for whatever they could find, after months of not finding employment. The local and national unemployment figures do not reflect these burdens, which is one of many reasons why people are fed up with bureaucrats not fully understanding the daily struggles. A sure-fire fix lies in temporary staffing agencies. These companies are set up to help people that have been let go from well-paying jobs get back on their feet. Sometimes in the same field they left, other times in fields that are commensurate to their qualifications and wage-earning expectations. I don’t think that the average person trying to earn a living knows that the gateway to some of the best Tulsa jobs is through staffing firms. Interviews and qualifications testing will help the agency pinpoint the right fit for you, matched with their clients needs. Think about the last time you were unemployed or between jobs. How many resumes did you send out to e-mail addresses or job postings at places like LinkedIn, Monster or Career Builder? Were you able to find work quickly or did you have a hard time getting the Human Resources Director to pay attention? It’s perfectly normal to continue sending out resumes on your own looking for the next career opportunity, but why not have someone else doing the same thing on your behalf? The worst thing that can happen is you land a job on your own and have to tell the staffing agency that you’ve been hired. Either way, they still have all of your skills listed with your resume and the results from your testing. Should that job not pan out, you’ve already set down the foundation to bounce back quickly. Being unemployed is a soul sucking situation. It demoralizes the recipient and makes them question previous decisions. Tulsa jobs are not dependent on simply hiring someone to fill any position. It’s every bit as important for that job to be at the same level or even greater than the one they had before. Tulsa can brag about having a low unemployment rate, but if all of those jobs are entry level, minimum wage or your basic starter opportunities, have they really done all they can to help their citizens? Staffing agencies are one of the few outlets for keeping the wage-earning bubble in check.
