Just because your loved one is spending some or all of their Christmas in a care home, it doesn't mean that it won't be a jolly Christmas for them. This holiday season we are taking extra care in spreading the merriment by creating a family atmosphere at Christmas in nursing care homes. We are dedicating our time and efforts to make this Christmas and holiday season absolutely magical. As a child, Christmas eve is the most special and magical time of the year. The feelings of excitement get stirred up while waiting for father Christmas to arrive with all of their favourite presents. When they are older, these memories and wonderful feelings can still be stirred up to make it an equally joyous time of year. By adding a few special touches to decor and activity in the care home, we are able to recreate that same shimmer and sparkle for guests. Here are some special touches we use for Christmas cheer. For holiday activities, starting the first week of December, there is usually a flurry of activities for guests to choose from. These activities include: church and school choir performances, local brass band performances, and watching nativity plays coming from neighbourhood children to entertain the care home guests. Stockings that are hand made by local volunteers and hung somewhere visible in their rooms, while small presents are gifted daily. These might include chocolates, traditional ornaments, and other treats in each guests' stocking. Fun options like a wee tipple of whisky to accompany the morning tea or coffee are given for some guests. On Christmas day, a family like atmosphere is further created by a traditional home cooked Christmas dinner including well loved reminiscent trimmings that they would find at home with their families. To further create that family feeling, family oriented activities and increased visiting hours are also implemented. Decorations around the whole care home also create that at home family feeling. Normally a spring of holly is placed around the Christmas pudding with Christmas wreaths on doors. Exterior lights hang like icicles from our rooftops for when resident's come in and out of the care home during holiday visitations with their family. Inside, sprinkles of Christmas spirit are seen everywhere with lights, holiday colours, and in helping guests to look their holiday best. Real holiday candles are lit at the dinner tables where possible, and homemade cookies and crackers are set out during lunch and dinner times for dessert. Christmas merriment is our priority when we invite children as well to visit as often as possible. We ask the children from local schools to put up their Christmas artwork as well. Overall, we love to recreate the sparkle of joy in the eyes of our guests and to bring them back to their best Christmas memories by the smell of cinnamon and nutmeg in their warm apple cider treats. We love to nursing care homes holt residents them smile when we bring on the dazzling array of festivities and activities this season.
