Dresses are the iconic apparel of women in Western culture. However, anciently and still in some eastern cultures, men wore dresses as well. You can look to ancient Greece and find that both genders wore fabric draped around their bodies in dress-type clothing. Today the retro look is trendy and you can see historic dress forms reinvented for the modern woman on women all over the world. While there are many options of where to buy dresses, a number of women choose to shop at dress boutiques because of the variety and diversity found there. The following are some iconic dresses throughout American history. Empire Silhouettes This dresses came in to dominance at the end of the 18th century and were the most prominent style until the 1820s. The idea was taken from ancient Greece and has the waistline right under the bust with flowing material coming down to the floor. There was a modern revival of the empire waist in the 1960s and today many women still opt for this look because it is believed to create a slimmer look. Hoop Skirts Hoop skirt were created as a form to hold a woman’s skirt in an exact place and shape. They varied in size and shape, some being wider on the sides and others being a more perfect circle around the woman. They were the epitome of style during Lincoln’s presidency and can be seen in many movies set in that time period. Today, some women will wear them under large and heavy wedding dresses. LBD The little black dress was created by Coco Chanel and Jean Patou in the 1920’s. The concept that was thrown at woman was that every woman needed a LBD as an essential part of her wardrobe. Traditionally the LBD was simple and not floor length. It was supposed to be versatile enough that a woman could dress it up for a nice evening or wear it casually for shopping. This style is still very much in trend today, although many LBDs are much more embellished than their processors. Look into shopping at the dress boutiques around you and score a LBD of your own.
