No one likes the idea of roaches lurking in the cracks and crevices of their kitchen, bathroom or other areas of the home. These insects not only create an uncomfortable feeling and a certain amount of fear for many homeowners, but they also pose a very real threat to health and home. Cockroaches can bite homeowners as well as can leave feces or mucus around the home. Some people can have serious allergic reactions to each or any of these things. The antigens produced by these agents or actions can also increase asthmatic symptoms in those who are prone to respiratory problems. If a roach's waste is deposited or left near food that you and your family eats; germs and bacteria can easily cause sickness in humans. According to the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), they "spread nearly 33 different kinds of bacteria…picking up germs on the spines of their legs and bodies." Cockroaches are probably our most despised pest. Some of the negative image is not without reason. Cockroaches have been linked to asthma problems, especially in children. The NPMA also warns that "cockroach allergens can trigger asthma attacks." Cockroach allergens affect adults and children. These "allergens also may increase a child's risk of developing asthma" according to both a National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences & Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry. Cockroaches are more than just pesky pests, they pose a real health danger to many people, especially children. If a family member is showing signs of respiratory distress, such as persistent coughing, especially at night time, tightness in the chest, and wheezing, investigate whether cockroaches may be involved in any worsening of symptoms. Even more serious is the possibility that they are spreading threatening diseases. They can potentially spread hepatitis A, cholera, dysentery, and a variety of bacteria or viral infections. Parasitic worms can also be transmitted through these pests. Symptoms such as diarrhea, pussy or bloody stool, and abdominal cramps are just a few of the problems that these insects can cause. Damages to drywall and wood can also result from the presence of these bugs. Inspect your home for hidden holes where they may have eaten through the walls. When you find these areas, you may also realize that there are feces, eggs, bits of food and other messy particles that need to be removed, as these things can cause allergic reactions and the spread of disease.
