"Yerba Mate´" Tea: The Properties

Health
From time to time, everyone wants to sit down and enjoy a nice glass of tea. Do you realize that there are different types of teas? A special herbal tea from South America called “mate´” is piquing interest all over the world these days. The drink has long been a popular tradition in countries like Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Now other parts of the world, such as the United States are taking notice of some of the healthy benefits of drinking this naturally mood enhancing tea. Some claim that mate´ is like coffee, tea, and chocolate all rolled into one! What could be better than tea, coffee and chocolate packed into one package? In the paragraphs below, we are going to tell you what this tea has in it and who discovered it first.

What Does This Tea Have in It?

Of course, by now, you are probably wondering exactly what this tea has in it. “Yerba mate´” contains the minerals potassium, magnesium, and manganese, which are commonly found in many plants used to make tea, but mate´ also has a special combination of xanthines, or stimulants. The Yerba mate´’s unique mixture of caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline has been found to effect muscle tissue rather than the central nervous system. The result is that mate´ has a relaxing effect on smooth muscle tissue, but a stimulating effect on myocardial tissue, or heart muscle. Yes, this tea is good for you and people are encouraged to drink it.

It Also Has Antioxidants

Mate´ tea also contains antioxidants, and among its species the “Ilex”, it has the highest concentration. Other studies conducted found mate´ had a “hypocholesterolemic” effect, or in other words, it helped to lower cholesterol in test subjects. So, if you have high cholesterol, go ahead and try some of this team – it might be exactly what you need. These studies observed that the tea had “lipid”-lowering properties, and could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Green tea has been making that claim for centuries as well, but mate´ has the added benefit of having a mild muscle relaxing effect. Basically, this tea has exactly what you need for a healthy heart.

Who Discovered This Tea First?

The very first people to discover and use Yerba mate´ were the indigenous “Guarani and Tupi´” peoples of Paraguay and southern Brazil, but the plant was actually domesticated by Jesuit missionaries in the seventeenth century. Now many tea shops and restaurants offer mate´ for their customers to enjoy. In modern times it is enjoyed in various forms throughout South America and has even found its way to countries as distant as South Africa. This tea was discovered years ago and now, people in today’s world are enjoying it. Are you ready to take advantage of the health benefits that this tea has to offer?
