Diseases of the spine, brain, and nerves that connect them are called neurological disorders. Overall, there are more than 600 neurological diseases that affect people. Now with science progressing the way it has, curing neurological illnesses is become easier. Here are some of the most common diseases and information on curing neurological illnesses. Epilepsy A person suffering from epilepsy gets recurring seizures which is caused due to the abnormal activity of nerve cells, called neurons, in the brain. There are many causes for epilepsy, such as an attempt by the brain to repair itself after a stroke or a head injury, or an imbalance of nerve-signaling chemicals called neurotransmitters. There are some types of epilepsy which are known to be hereditary and have been tied to specific genes. Curing neurological illnesses such as epilepsy may require more than one kind of treatment, such as surgery and medication. Most types of epilepsy can be taken care of by medication, but if that doesn’t work, surgery is often resorted to for curing neurological illnesses such as epilepsy. Parkinson’s disease In this neurological disease, the brain cells that control movement is targeted. People who suffer from Parkinson’s disease exhibit symptoms such as stiffness and poor balance, tremors, dementia or depression. Some people even exhibit "autonomic" nervous system impairment, therefore leading to loss of control in bladder and bowel movements and blood pressure. Causes for the disease are not known. Medication can only provide relief from the symptoms, but curing neurological illnesses like Parkinson’s diseaseis not possible. The progression of the disease will continue despite the medication. In some cases, surgery, muscle strengthening and physical therapy are recommended. Multiple Sclerosis Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease wherein a person’s brain, optic nerves and spinal cord are affected. This is believed to be an autoimmune disease which is caused when nervous system is damaged due to the immune system attacking it. It has a gradual progression, with alternating periods of good health, remission, good health and disabling flare-ups.Curing neurological illnesses like Multiple Sclerosis usually involves a more than one kind of treatment. A patient’s physician will be able to design a treatment plan that is tailored to their individual needs, their state of health and their medical condition. Brain Tumors A growth of cells in the brain which multiply in an uncontrollable and abnormal manner is called a brain tumor. The tumor may be cancerous or benign, and are graded from 1 to 4, depending on how fast they grow and how likely they are to spread. Surgery is the only option for the removal of a brain tumor in a patient. Stroke When a person has a stroke, a blood vessel in their brain bursts or becomes blocked, sometimes leading to permanent brain injury or even death. With prompt treatment and follow-up care patients may be able to lead healthy, productive lives. Treatments include medication, tissue plasminogen activator, or endovascular procedures.
