An analysis conducted by the CBC news in Canada has found that the price of electricity will rise rapidly through the end of the decade. It has been predicted that the average cost per kilowatt-hour country wide will rise more than 50 per cent by 2020. These costs are placed on the average household due to the building of thousands of kilometres of new transmission lines, along with more than 100 new power plants being built between now and 2020. Cheap power is now a thing of the past. The old hydroelectric plants that were build and paid off years ago cannot handle the rising demand and meet the country's needs. This means newer, more expensive plants have to be built. Plants, that only 8 years ago costs far cheaper to build than they do today. A 2009 MIT study found that new nuclear plants cost twice as much to build today, and that the once cheap coal-fired plants, cost far more because of emissions restrictions. It seems that either way, we are screwed!! But this shouldn't be a surprise. Governments knew they would need to make these critical, costly investments. But what they didn't do was put enough effort into helping people in need pay their bills or cut their usage through conservation and subsidized home retrofits. Ok, so what does all this mean to us?
