Coir Carpets: Alternative Flooring for an Eco-Friendly Home

Interior Design
If you are looking for eco-friendly alternative flooring, coir carpets are a great choice. These carpets are derived from sustainable material and natural fiber from coconut husks. But compared to other natural fiber carpets such as seagrass and sisal, coir is relatively scarce. This carpet can mostly be found in India and Sri Lanka where coconut plantations are clustered. The environment in such places provides the most suitable conditions for coconut to grow and have a continued supply of coir for rugs and carpets. While it may not have as much demand as other natural fiber carpets, doormats made of coir has an equally great demand for its durability and resistance to moisture.

How to Produce Coir

Coir is a fiber that is made out of the outer husks of the coconut. Coconuts that are already of age to be de-husked are picked and the fibers are soaked in water for quite some time. The water and some microbial activity that happens while the fibers are soaked help the strands to loosen up and separate from each other. Once the separating is done, it is then spun into yards of yarn. When yarns are already produced, manufacturers will then weave the strands into different patterns and turn them into coir carpets.

Advantages of Using Coir

Being made from natural fiber, there are so many advantages to using coir as your choice of carpet at home. For one, it is very durable and will last for so many years. This is the ideal flooring or carpet for places where heavy foot traffic is expected. Fibers of coir are very rough and rigid and will not show signs of wear and tear even with heavy foot traffic. Two, since this is naturally produced, there are no chemicals or pesticides used in the production of such carpets. This is great for households where one or more members suffer from allergies or asthma. Three, because of its tough fibers, it is resistant to mold and mildew formation even if exposed for prolonged hours on water and moisture. Four, maintenance if very easy; all you have to do is vacuum it and it’s good as new again. For spilled water just wipe it with dry cloth. And five, it is made of sustainable materials so there is no harm with the environment. Coir is a byproduct of the coconut fruit so there is very minimal impact on the environment that it will produce.

Disadvantages of Using Coir

But just as the many advantages to using coir in your home, there are also some disadvantages to it that many people prefer using other natural fibers instead. For one, it has a very rough texture that is definitely unpleasant to the skin. This is why carpets mad of coir are best used as doormats instead. And two, if you happen to purchase dyed coir, you can’t expect it to be durable anymore as chemicals from dyes weaken its strands.

Coir carpets are a great to use especially with the growing concern about environmental changes nowadays. While they may only be best used on doorways, you can still use it in a number of places and in a number of ways.
