With the recent court case between Apple and Samsung, ‘patent wars’ have spread across the world and become a must among companies wanting to protect their ideas. The recent battle between Apple and Samsung led to one of the most high profile court cases in the US. Apple accused Samsung of copying their mobile device design. The case continued for a while as both parties fought to defend their case and resulted in Samsung having to pay a lot of money in substantial damages to Apple. Since this case it has been reported that there has been an ‘explosive growth’ in patent litigation, some reports are even stating that cases in the same area have tripled in a decade. There are lawyers suggesting that the growth ‘threatens to interrupt the supply chains of some of the world’s best-known companies and products.’ In 2011 it was revealed that each of the leading smartphone providers were at some point involved with an ITC (International Trade Commission) dispute. For instance Google bought a case against Apple, Samsung bought a case against Apple and Google bought a case against Microsoft. These figures mean that IP lawyers are becoming busier from working on cases like this. It shows that manufacturers and software companies should protect their products against anyone who may infringe them in the future.
