Just two days ago, Linda Gross, a 47-year-old former nurse testified that her life had been turned upside down due to the Prolift vaginal mesh implant. Due to complications with the implant, Gross can no longer work, have sexual intercourse with her husband, or sit down for longer than 20 minutes without experiencing severe discomfort. She takes over 20 medications a day and has had 400 medical visits, including physical therapy sessions and multiple surgeries. Gross’ lawsuit is the first among 1,800 filed in New Jersey against Ethicon, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary company that manufactures the Prolift vaginal mesh implant, Vaginal mesh is used to treat pelvic organ prolapse, a condition in which the muscles that support the pelvic organs weaken to the point that the bladder, rectum, uterus or small bowel either press against the vaginal walls or drop into the uterus. Unfortunately, thousands of women have suffered numerous injuries as a result of vaginal mesh treatment. Complications from using vaginal mesh include: Painful sexual intercourse Pelvic or vaginal pain and bleeding Recurrent prolapse Urinary problems Reports of vaginal mesh complications started as early as 2005 and began escalating in 2008, when more than 1,000 women reported problems. Although vaginal mesh complications were still considered “rare” at that point, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a formal safety warning to the public. In 2011, nearly 3,000 more cases of complications were reported, and the FDA released a second warning. The following year, the FDA ordered over 30 vaginal mesh manufacturers to conduct safety studies on their mesh products. However, the FDA has yet to issue an official recall. Several lawsuits by women who are suffering from vaginal mesh complications have been filed nationwide. In July, 2012, a California jury awarded a woman $5.5 million for the pain and suffering she experienced with the Avaulta mesh implant.
