Our current world is by no doubt whatsoever a technological one as our daily lives is governed by different gadgets and devices. Most of these techno-gadgets cannot operate on their own and require connection and assistance from other devices. This has therefore given birth to networking practices which involve the interconnection of different devices through different media. The internet as we now know it can perhaps be taken as the perfect example of networking. Networks can generally be defined as the interconnections of different end computing devices and intermediary devices using different types of media. The two main types of media used include physical media and wireless media. Physical media entails the use of different data cabling in connecting devices and a host of other cable management practices such as connection and termination. Ethernet cables are connected using rj-45 connectors while coaxial cables use coaxial cable connectors. End devices in networking include computers, machines, mobile devices, telephones, office equipment and different communication equipment. Servers are an example of control devices whose functions are to manage the network as well as store network databases and can commonly be found mounted on server racks. Other components include Ethernet splitters which are used in splitting communication signals and wall plates which are used in mounting of cables and other networking components. There are numerous advantages of networking of computing devices with the main one being the facilitation of sharing different resources with each other. Computers on a network can easily share different resources for example data and information together with other physical resources such as printers and faxes. All shared information in form of files and databases is stored in servers which are mounted in specifically designed server racks from where any device in the network can access the information. Another major advantage of networking is the facilitation of communication between people and devices. Whether it is between two devices on a simple network over one type of data cabling or in different parts of the world is the internet, communication is made possible by networking and has therefore brought people even closer. Networking also has the benefit of being cheap as most components are easily available at affordable prices. It lessens the burden of having to buy different devices for example; one printer in an office building can be shared easily with all the computers in the office instead of buying a printer for each computer.
