The grade is based on 4 C’s – carat, color, clarity and cut. Each category is separate from the others and every good C attached to the stone adds separate value to its price. I am pretty sure you would not want to buy something you have not scrutinized – there are fakes! Every diamond should be graded to know its real value. So – what do you have to know about the 4 Cs? • Carat Carat pertains to the weight of the diamond. Inexperienced buyers sometimes refer to the size as carat. This is not so since carat is particularly about the weight and not the size. Carat abbreviated ct is broken down into points and there are 100 points in 1 carat. Jewelry-informed people would categorize the stone to be 50 points. This means that it is half carat; a 75-point diamond is three-fourth carat and so on. • Color Yellow is an important color when speaking of this particular piece of jewelry. When you speak of color, you are determining the quantity of yellow tint that is visible in the stone. Color here is expressed in alphabet scale that starts with the letter D, naming continuously till letter Z with D as the highest quality as far as color is concerned. In the color scale, a grade of D, E of F means that there are no yellow tints and this is known as the colorless kinds. There are near colorless and these would belong to the next range which is H, I, J and K. The near colorless kinds have little taint of yellow in them. With grades for J to Z are no-quality stones and they are only used for fashion earrings, rings, necklaces and other jewelry pieces. • Clarity Understanding clarity may be one difficult part in learning about this precious gem. You have first to learn about inclusions which refer to characteristics that present black spots, scratches or white feathers in the jewel. Clarity now would pertain to the number of inclusions present in a piece. With high clarity, you will hardly see these blemishes under the microscope, much more with naked eye. Highest clarity is known as flawless (FL) or internally flawless (IF).With FL and IF, you will not see any inclusions. These are very rare kinds and naturally, are more expensive. Next in clarity, you will have the very very slightly included 1 and 2 (VVS1 and VVS2) with 1 having lesser inclusions and is therefore higher in the scale of 1 to 10. Inclusions are also difficult to detect in the VVS. Next are the VS1 and VS2 which are very slightly included. You will next have I1, I2, I3 kinds which are included diamonds. The inclusions in I kinds are visible to the naked eye, with the I3 being suitable only for fashion jewelry. • Cut The different cuts are known as ideal, excellent, very good, good, fair and poor. When we talk about cut, we refer to how proportional the gem is. The proportion on the other hand pertains to symmetry of the cut angles as well as how polish the piece is. The sparkle of the jewel comes from the cut. A diamond with an ideal cut is rare to find and therefore is high priced.
