Hamsters are the Houdini of the animal world. They are very crafty animals and can escape out of the smallest openings. Once out they gravitate towards darker, low traffic areas to ensure survival. Owners’ have found them hiding in walls, heaters, floor boards, and couches. Rumor has it that one person’s hamster escaped and lived in their sofa for 2 years before finally being discovered! I have personally found a hamster in the back of a desk, and inside a heater. One of my hamster’s escaped from his cage in my basement, traversed two flights of stairs, crawled under multiple doors, and was found the next day in my guest bedroom. That is quite the trip! Here are some tips to help retrieve your hamster. Time is of the essence! The first thing you must do is establish a perimeter, how far might your hamster have gone? Most of the time hamsters do not travel far from their cage and can be found in dark, secluded spaces of the room that they were in. You should always assume they have traveled very far and take all necessary measures. The instances where you find your hamster unharmed are rare. If you see that they have escaped you must act quickly to save, and return them to their cage. Estimate how long it has been since your little Houdini has escaped and block off that entire area. Now, you can slowly and meticulously search the entire area for them. Look for clues to identify their whereabouts. Your hamster may leave behind “presents”, food, or wood shavings. If you can find any of these it will help you find your little buddy. You will have the most success finding your hamster when they are awake at night. If they escaped and it is daytime they will probably be somewhere dark, and quiet; sleeping. Set traps! If you are unable to find your hamster immediately, just seal off all exits and coax them out. A fantastic strategy is to get a bucket and set some apples in it as a treat for them. Next, make a staircase out of books/magazines and wait. When your hamster starts to explore they will smell the apples, climb up and into the bucket to get them, but be unable to escape again.
