The Ping G25 Fairway wood has been designed to offer higher ball speeds, higher launches and higher levels of forgiveness. The G25 features the thinnest face that Ping have ever put in a fairway wood. By using an extreme variable-thickness face, Ping's R&D team were able to trim weight from the face and place it lower and further back in the club. It is still a generous head size, but a little shorter from heel to toe. It does sit very well at address and the usual Ping low profile gives you the feeling of being able to sweep the ball away very easily. The large, low profile head design features a new matt black finish that looks more like the i20 fairway than the Ping G20 fairway wood. Beyond the new finish, everything to do with the G25 fairway is engineered to get the ball in the air easier, quicker and longer. The design features a thin variable-thickness face to increase ball speed. There's more mass low in the clubhead to move the CG lower and back, which promotes a high launch and increases forgiveness. Combine this with an external sole weight and naturally the club's CG moves lower and further back as well, increasing the club's forgiveness, especially on shots struck on the lower portion of the face (an area Ping claims is the most common 'miss-hit'). Compared to the previous model, the G25 fairway wood has a thinner face and more weight lower and further back to increase ball speed and certainly it did seem to go as well as the G20. You can see the screw weight in the back of the sole section, which again is a visual change that some will like more than others. Combined with the better player looks, this is an ideal club for mid-handicappers or those who want a 'put-it-in-the-fairway' club from the tee. The smaller head shape did affect the sound a little and we probably preferred the sound and head size of the G20 fairway, but that is our preference as there was very little to choose between the 2 models but at least now you have the choice of styles.
