The Titleist AP2 712 irons has become one of the more desirable clubs on the market among mid to low handicaps. Titleist was able to increase the irons moment of inertia (MOI) without eliminating the “playablity” of the club.
The cheap golf clubs AP2 irons are technically advanced blades that provide increased forgiveness without sacrificing shot workability while combining traditional blade length and sole width with a more efficient multi-material weight distribution. This was done by increasing the MOI by 7%, without impacting workability or control. A dual cavity design pushes weight to the perimeter for playability without losing the ability to shape shots.
The forged carbon steel body has two tungsten plugs to help increase moment of inertial by 7 percent. The result is more shots starting on line and traveling a predictable distance. The cavity has an aluminum-elastomer insert to improve feel. A narrower sole in short irons also helps with how the club interacts with the turf through impact.
The Titleist AP2 712 irons feature a dual tungsten weighting in the sole of the club that accounts for 20% of the overal weight of the clubhead. This increases the MOI of the club by 7% without having to make the head longer, which means that it is very forgiving for its size and Titleist claim that it has a 6% smaller disperson than the previoius AP2 model. This is certainly a very easy club to hit. At address the offset is larger than in the cheap MB 712 irons but not so much that it will put better players off.
The sound and feel at impact is excellent and the trajectory was not much higher than the AP1s. Indeed we could see a lot of single figure golfers using these irons or certainly blending in the longer irons with the shorter irons from the cheap AP1 712 irons. The Tuned Feel System is a co-molded medallion of soft elastomer and aluminium plate. This tuned cavity insert has been specifically designed to improve the sound and feel of the AP2 irons.
