Hard to believe it is almost over. What an incredible tournament this 2014 World Cup has been! From 32 teams we are now down to two. The road to the finals has been fantastic for both the teams and we’ve had quite a few heartbreaking and hearts stopping moments. Argentina and Germany will face each other in the last but definitely not the least of matches at Maracana in Rio De Janeiro on Sunday, July 13th. Both the footballing superpowers have won the Jules Rimet trophy a combined five times, with the Germans having a little edge over the South Americans. Although the history suggests Germany have lost more finals than any other nation. The European powerhouse and Argentina have not lost a game in Brazil yet. In the past two World Cups, both the teams have met in the quarter finals and on both the occasions Germany has defeated the 2-time World champions. This is a record third meeting between Germany and Argentina in a World Cup final. The South Americans won 3-2 in 1986 before West Germany got revenge four years later by winning 1-0 in the final at Italia’ 90. But, this World Cup final depends mostly on the two stalwarts, Muller and Messi. Muller has been in blistering form. No player has been involved in more goals at this World Cup than the German striker (5 goals, 3 assists). Thomas Muller has the opportunity to become the first player to win the Golden Boot twice. Messi on the other hand won four consecutive Man of the Match awards in his opening four games, which is now a record. This is the tenth World Cup final between a European and South American nation. South America have won seven of the previous nine. It will be hard for Argentina to cope with the high flying Germans unless we see some Messi Magic at the biggest stage possible. This final match is the opportunity for Lionel Messi to shine in front of the world; if Messi can play the game of his life and guide Argentina to the title, he will be considered one of the best in history along with Maradona and Pele. Life-long dreams will come true for many on Sunday. Germany are unbeaten in their last 17 internationals (12 wins, 5 draws). Argentina have won 9 of their last 11 matches at the World Cup.
