Have Just as Much Fun off the Slopes in Alpe d'Huez!

Travel & Tourism
While Alpe d’Huez is a favourite among avid skiers, this sunshine-blessed winter ski resort has plenty to do off the slopes too, which is great news if you are travelling with a group and one of you is a non-skier. Even the most hard-core skiers might want a day off the slopes when they are on holiday, so we have put together a list of Alpe d’Huez off-the-slope highlights.

Ice Skating

The ice rink in this resort is open all year round and it is open every day right into the evening. You and your friends can hire skates and enjoy an hour or two perfecting your skills. You could even have a go at curling if you fancy joining one of the weekly initiation sessions. The ice hockey matches held here throughout the winter are always great entertainment too.

Shopping

The commercial centre at Les Bergers, close to most of the Alpe d’Huez chalets, is now a haven for designer shoppers. It is home to lots of high-end boutique type shops but also to several more casual shops too.

Leisure Centre

You can easily spend a day in the leisure centre here. From climbing to swimming and from the gym to yoga and fitness, there is something for everyone.

Alpine Coaster

If you don’t ski but are after a bit of an adrenaline rush, then you really have to try the Alpine Coaster. Located in Les Bergers, this is a 700m coaster that also offers a virtual reality option. Hitting the incredible speed of 40kph, the ride is a thrill not to be missed. Opening seven days a week throughout the winter, there is no excuse not to have a go.

Pamper Off Piste

Why not head to one of the onsite spas and indulge in a luxury treatment? Every budget is catered for and after a few days on the slopes, you might be in need of some TLC.

Snowshoeing

This is the perfect activity for the non-skier. While you may find the racket type appendages attached to your feet a little strange at first, they offer a fabulous way to get out and explore the mountain, while getting some exercise too. There are miles of walks you can do and all are well signed with directions and length. Hire the kit in town and you are ready to go.

Ski-Doo or Husky Action

Another way to enjoy the wonderful scenery around these mountains is to hire a ski-doo or a husky sled. Ski-doo tours leave from the Les Bergers at the bottom of town and there are several options to enjoy. Some include meals too. The husky-sled rides go from the top of Altiport and run every afternoon.

Where to Stay

In Alpe d’Huez, chalets are a great accommodation choice. If you choose to self-cater then you can pick and choose when you eat in and can explore the many wonderful eating options in resort too.

It is easy to see why non skiers in a group of friends can have as much fun on a winter holiday in Alpe d’Huez as the skiers. With so much to do off the slopes, there is no excuse for getting bored.
