When you're planning a beach holiday in Spain's Lloret de Mar, Barcelona will usually be your favoured airport. So before you take the easy shuttle transfer, why not explore the city a little? You may not have much time to spare so we have chosen three of the best highlights. Which one will you go to first – and will you make time for them all before you head off to Lloret de Mar? Barcelona awaits! Sagrada Familia Before the short journey to Lloret de Mar, Barcelona has many treats to look forward to – but the most famous is definitely the Sagrada Familia. This amazing building was first begun more than a century ago, in 1882. Unbelievably, as of 2010 the building was still only halfway towards completion. The building has a very chequered history and its creation has outlasted not only its famous designer (Gaudi), but also many more who have attempted its completion. While it is said that you either love or hate the Sagrada Familia, it certainly invokes emotion in all who gaze upon it. And your pictures of the city just wouldn't be the same without including it! Park Guell Antoni Gaudi was, of course, involved in the original construction of the Sagrada Familia, and he is also closely associated with Park Guell. The park makes for a tranquil and relaxing way to spend a few spare hours in the city – and there's plenty to look at as well. Among the highlights you should not miss on a visit to Park Guell is the incredible mosaic salamander, which plants its feet on one of the staircases in the park. Made with exquisite mosaic craftsmanship, it is a favourite with children. More examples of this wonderful mosaic detail can be seen throughout other areas of the park as well. The Gothic Quarter Of the three areas we mention in this article, this one is probably the least known – but it is certainly well worth the effort to see. If you love architecture and the idea of preserving and old city within the modern one, this may well turn out to be the hidden gem of your holiday to Lloret de Mar! Barcelona expresses real character in its Gothic Quarter, and you will be able to wander aimlessly around the labyrinthine sprawl of streets. The area has changed over the years of course, but there are still buildings here that are Medieval in nature. The detail in the buildings – especially in areas such as Carrer del Bisbe Irurita – is incredible and it almost feels like a step back in time. Be sure you have your camera at the ready - you will undoubtedly want to take plenty of photos! This amazing city has many different faces, yet by seeing even just the highlights you can get a broad view of life here – both today and in the past. Make sure you add the above three destinations to your list of things to do. Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct.
