If you love to travel and have a knack for taking killer photos, you may want to consider winning your next trip by entering one of the prestigious photography competitions open to residents of the UK. You need not be a professional photographer to participate - in fact, most contests welcome the amateur, hoping they might uncover some undiscovered talent. As a travel competition winner you will not only enjoy the opportunity to explore some of the world’s most fabulous locations, the recognition that goes along with winning can also be quite nice! Organisations in the travel industry will often use photo competitions as a way for them to promote whatever it is they sell. Enticing entrants with a trip in exchange for unique, eye-catching photos is not surprisingly something that appeals to many people. Here I share some of the bigger UK travel contests, and hopefully your interest will be sparked enough to consider entering one (or all of them!) yourself, knowing there is a real possibility that you could be the next travel competition winner! The Guardian What’s great about the travel competitions at the Guardian newspaper is that they hold a separate photo contest every month, so there are multiple times throughout the year that you can enter. Most months are themed, so you will need to take a read of their website for the particular theme of a given month. Each monthly travel competition winner has their shot featured on the Guardian website and receives a copy of their own print to hang on a wall, as well as having their photo displayed at a year-end exhibition at the Guardian offices in London. Then, at the end of each year, the Guardian selects a best overall photo from the monthly winners and the person who comes out on top wins an amazing prize. The 2015 overall prize was a self-drive holiday through Iceland for two people! Wanderlust Wanderlust Travel Magazine holds an annual travel competition, with the winners being announced at the Destinations Show in London each year. Wanderlust requires entrants to submit snaps that fall into one of their specific categories, such as people, landscape or wildlife. They also encourage amateur photographers to participate through a designated section. Prizes in the 2015/2016 contest included a photography commission with Western Australian Tourism for the amateur section and £3,000 in cash for the travel competition winner of a portfolio category – a series of five photos per entry. Not a bad incentive to enter! National Geographic Probably the best known worldwide, National Geographic also runs a yearly photo competition. The winner’s photo is displayed at theprintspace in London and prints can be ordered by the public through an affiliate website. In keeping with the digital age, they have opened up their contest to include mobile, video and portfolio categories. Winners of the 2015 contest were awarded photographic commission to shoot for National Geographic Traveller (UK) on one of five amazing trips to Tanzania, Abu Dhabi, Vietnam, Iceland and Italy! Photographic contests provide an opportunity to see some spectacular places around the world, even for photography amateurs. Visit the websites of each of these competitions to learn the specific requirements and entry deadlines for their upcoming contests, and take a look at the photos from previous winners. You will no doubt be impressed by their skills, and may be motivated to take a look through your memory cards for some of your own photos that you could enter.
