Did you know that you can now use a product which has mandelic acid in it for the luxurious price of $120 for ONE fluid ounce! The recipe comes from a 3,600 years old Egyptian document. But before you get too excited, it might be better to wait for the clinical trials to see whether this is really hypoallergenic skincare at a price. That basically means that it is not likely to cause an allergic reaction. The so-called effects may be impressive like synergising, viscoelasticity, revitalizing, resurfacing (no, not the road, your skin!) but if they cause allergies, then it is disastrous. Common allergic reactions range from redness, irritation, and blotchy skin. There may also be problems with the skin itself reacting and contact dermatitis may be the result. Sometimes that results in blistering and the condition has to be treated with steroids. What is the cause of allergic reactions? Basically this is due to one fact which very few companies want to talk about and that is that our skin can absorb up to 60% of what we put on it. Why do people wear nicotine patches and other patches for medical reasons? The second cause is that the ingredients, even in very expensive products, are cheap and not so cheerful and are anything but hypoallergenic skincare. They are using preservatives like parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, alcohol and the famous fragrances which can contain up to 4,000 chemicals. Not to mention allergens, formaldehyde and other toxins which are more likely than not to cause an allergic reaction. Paraben-free skincare is obviously not one of their top priorities. What should we look for in hypoallergenic skincare? I always look to see whether any of the above ingredients based on chemical or preservatives are on the label. Then I find out if the company is committed to using top quality natural ingredients such as avocado, grapeseed oil, jojobo, and macadamia oil. Here I am thinking especially of eco-friendly and skin friendly components such as rigin which is a specially formulated peptide. There should be a very clear statement on their website stating that they are committed to paraben-free skincare. If they have signed up for the Campaign for Safer Cosmetics, that is another positive sign. At the time of writing, 1,400 companies have signed up. That is still a minority, unfortunately. We still have a long way to go for hypoallergenic skincare to be taken for granted. William Colbert is a natural health enthusiast.
