With police budgets forever seemingly being cut back, the notion of providing for personal security is pretty common with homeowners these days. Americans are famous for our small attention spans. We tend to focus on something intensely and then more or less ignore it a couple of weeks later. There is nothing wrong with this so long as you remember to close all the windows when you leave. If you do not, you are practically begging to be robbed. An open window will look like a blinking neon sign to a thief, so take the time to close them. The open garage is a classic mistake as well. I know people who consider opening the garage door to be part of their morning ritual. They open it and leave it open for hours on end, sometimes even all day! The problem? Anybody can walk up and go “shopping” in the garage. You’ve also created an area where a criminal can get into the home without anyone watching them. Close your garage door if you are not going to be in the garage! The hide a key strategy is another loser. If I asked you how to get into a random house, what is the first thing you would do? You would start looking under the welcome mat and planters for a key to the home. Well, what do you think thieves are going to do? The hide a key strategy should be renamed the “come on in and steal everything strategy” because that is what it will accomplish! Home security is an important subject these days.
